Day 8 - final discoveries and desert musings

Awoke very early this morning and checked the pitfall traps with Boyd. We were lucky to catch a Hairy legged Dunnart and six Spinifex Hopping Mice. Today was our last day in the desert so we were packing ready to depart for the landing strip near Poepel’s Corner at around 12 o’clock noon.

As this time approached, we were notified that the aeroplane would not be able to pick us up because it had been grounded at Wilpena Pound in the Flinders’ Ranges because of thick cloud. This meant that we would have to spend another day in the Simpson Desert; however, we were not too concerned as it gave us a more relaxing day to explore around the base camp, read the reference books in the travelling library as well as to rest and recuperate.

We were also able to use this time to download plant and animal species lists from Charlie and share photographs with each other. Boyd had taken some beautiful photographs of the birds we had observed on our expedition. I was able to check on the names of many photographs of desert flora with Charlie.

The evening gave us a chance to share stories around the campfire with some of Andrews’ friends who were helping out with transporting cameleers to Birdsville. We also were able to reflect on the entire 7 days of our expedition and look at the map of our expedition to see the region of the Simson Desert we had explored.

This region is part of the Munga Thirri National Park which is in the Queensland section of the Simpson Desert. Apparently, this region is largely unknown to scientific surveys and only indigenous people have had the opportunity to explore the area on foot.
